The sheep with souls and other stories
Veterinary chronicles from different countries

CAAM is happy to introduce an interesting book edited by Johannes Odendaal and Namitha Dipak.

The book, titled “The Sheep with Souls and other stories’ is a unique attempt to get veterinarians from different countries to write creatively about incidents in their professional lives that intrigued them or were plain unforgettable. The stories also bring in a bit of geography, travel, history, psychology, culture, and ecology and show that there are very few limits to what you can do with a veterinary degree – sometimes, it can even help you understand people better.

The book tries to showcase the creative talents of a group of veterinarians, and in the process also reveals the varied lives they lead and the challenges they face in different regions of the world. The book provides glimpses of human-animal-environment interactions over the last three decades of the 20th Century and the threshold of the 21st Century, and highlights the interconnections between these elements which makes problem-solving that much more complex. The book does not seek to sermonise or dictate solutions, but shows that solving the problems of today often requires more than just a perspective of a single factor like the animal alone. Issues of the environment and the culture of the people who live in close association with or are dependent upon the animals should also be considered.

“I have felt for many years that those who deal with animals and agriculture should speak up and write about the realities, rather than wait for someone else to do it. Things are so complex that we need as many facts and opinions to be able to come to our own conclusions. That was one of the reasons I got the idea to do this book”, says Namitha Dipak who has taken great interest and pains in editing and publishing the book.

“I wanted to show that even people of science can have compassion and creativity (in looking for solutions to problems) and we should try and solve problems using all these skills and talents rather than compartmentalise things and say that scientists should only be scientific and objective and should not "feel" or look beyond case histories if they really want to understand the foundation of the problems. At the same time, I did not want to give anyone lectures in the book so we tried to make it as light as possible so that non-technical people can also read it”, she adds.
