Diploma candidates on a field visit to
Vidyabodhini Highschool

Foundation course for the second batch of the diploma course was held from December 23-26, 2004 at Sriranga, Sullia. Resource persons Mr. Addoor Krishna Rao, 'Shree' Padre, Mr. Poornaprajna Belur and Dr. Shivaram Pailoor explained in detail the basics of farm journalism. They taught the candidates about forms of farm writing - report writing, feature/article, interviews, photo features, investigative reporting and information bits. On the first two evenings, they visited three places as practical assignment. First day they went through Sriranga. Next day visit was arranged to Balila Vidyabodhini Highschool, an innovative institution practicing soil and water conservation and to Kuriaje Tirumaleshwara Bhat's farm who has a passion for flower garden. Every morning resource persons evaluated candidates writings based on last day's visit. Candidates felt that this exercise helped them to know how to improve upon their write-ups.

Unique feature of the course was a dialogue with editors of farm journals and farm supplements coordinated on the third day of the workshop. CAAM Fellows and diploma candidates interacted with editors and sought their suggestion on improving writing skills. Editors' panel included Mr. Sudarshana (Adike Pathrike), Mr. Krishna Prasad (Sahaja Samruddha), Mr. Mallikarjuna Hosapalya (Pairu Pachche), Mr. M.T. Shanthimoole (Madhuprapancha), Mr. Ganadalu Srikanta (Vijaya Karnataka) and Mr. Anandatheertha Pyati (Prajavani).

Interaction between CAAM Fellows and
diploma candidates

On the same day there was an interaction between CAAM Fellows and diploma candidates. This facilitated the previous batch candidates to share their experiences and difficulties with the present batch and clarify their doubts.

In the evening Mr. Chanabasappa Shivappa Kombli of Kakola gave a glimpse of his work in his village to withstand 'drought' through groundwater recharging. His presentation along with slide-show gave a clear picture of his effort. CAAM gave away a special award to Mr. Kombli recognising his outstanding contribution to soil and water conservation.

On the last day of the workshop, candidates and resource persons sat together and discussed the tasks to be completed during the course. This included planning of the dissertation, which each candidate has to submit at the end of the diploma programme. There was also a revision of previous three days' learning. This was followed by an award giving ceremony.
