CAAM has ventured into book publication by releasing its first book 'Teredabaavi Marupoorana - Kakolada Yashogathe' (Openwell Recharging - Kakol's Success Story). This 24-page booklet in Kannada is written by development journalist Mr. Poornaprajna Belur.

The book has in its store detailed picture of the work done in Kakol, a village in Haveri District of Karnataka to overcome water scarcity. Mr. Chanabasappa Shivappa Kombli, an enthusiastic farmer leader in Kakol has taken up the cause and tried to recharge openwells in the village during last four years. So far 93 of 165 openwells have been recharged. There are more than 700 borewells in the village and efforts are on to recharge them.

Efforts for soil and water conservation have grown in different dimensions in the village. Natural Resources Development Association has been set up with Mr. Kombli as the president. Through this he has motivated the entire village to take up water recharging and afforestation. School children are also actively involved in the task. Inspired by the success of Kakol, its neighbouring villages have also taken up soil and water conservation methods.

Recognising Mr. Kombli's work in Kakol, CAAM conferred him a special award on the occasion of its fourth anniversary in December 2004.

This book is an extension of CAAM's efforts in farmer-friendly journalism. The centre has already been conducting a one-year correspondence diploma course in farm and rural journalism. It has also instituted annual farm journalism awards for the best farm article in two categories (practicing farmer and general). Positive response to our work in the field encouraged us to take up publication. Depending on the response to our first book, we intend to publish more books on constructive work done in farm and rural areas in Karnataka. We feel that such booklets with affordable cost (Rs.15) would make dissemination of information easy.
