State level farm journalism awards announced

CAAM has announced its awards for best farm articles for the year 2006. The awards, given in two categories are bagged by Mr. Bengali Venkatesha of Sirsi and Mr. Ganadhalu Srikanta, Bangalore.

CAAM instituted the awards in 2001 to encourage farmer friendly journalism in Kannada. In practicing farmer category Mr. Bengali Venkatesha’s article titled ‘Vinaa dainyena jeevanam’ (Meaning self-reliant farm life) published in Adike Pathrike has been selected for the award. In the article the author illustrated his experiments in farming and felt that farmers should understand their farm and practice farming accordingly. He has also shared his efforts towards self-reliance in the article.

In the general category, Mr.Ganadhalu Srikanta’s exhaustive feature ‘Velvet beans emba balli prapancha’ (On a mulching creeper called velvet beans) has bagged the award. The feature was published in the farm supplement ‘Krishi Vijaya’ of Vijaya Karnataka a popular Kannada daily. The article which focused on the experiences of farmers who are growing this mulching creeper in their farm, reflected upon both its negative and positive factors. Since the article got overwhelming response from the readers, Krishi Vijaya started a column to give more information on related aspects.

The awards carry a cash prize of Rs.2000 each besides a citation and a parisara shilpa. The awards will be presented on the occasion of CAAM’s sixth anniversary at ‘Grama Chethana’, Surashettikoppa near Hubballi, on December 10, 2006.
