CAAM set to enter seventh year

With a positive response for its activities in farmer-friendly farm journalism, CAAM has completed sixth year of its activities. The annual ceremony would be held on December 10, 2006 at Grama Chethana, Surashettikoppa near Hubballi, Karnataka. Dr. K. Ramakrishnappa, Joint Director of Horticulture and Head of Biotechnology Centre, Hulimavu and senior journalist Nagesh Hegde will be the chief guests for the programme.

The programme includes a book release, giving away CAAM annual awards in farm journalism and honouring successful farm journalism diploma candidates as CAAM Fellows.

Farm journalism awards

CAAM annual awards for farm journalism will be presented during the programme. Understanding the need to encourage farmer-friendly journalism in Kannada, CAAM has instituted awards in two categories – practicing farmer and general - since its inception. This year articles by Bengali Venkatesha of Sirsi and Ganadhalu Srikanta of Bangalore have been selected for the award.

In practicing farmer category, Bengali Venkatesh’s article titled ‘Vinaa dainyena jeevanam’ (indicating self-reliant farm life) published in Adike Pathrike has been selected for the award. In the general category, Ganadhalu Srikanta’s exhaustive feature ‘Velvet beans emba balli prapancha’ (on a mulching creeper called velvet beans) has bagged the award. The feature was published in the farm supplement ‘Krishi Vijaya’ of Vijaya Karnataka. The awards carry a cash prize of Rs.2000 each besides a citation and a parisara shilpa.

Farm and rural journalism course

Successful candidates of the third batch of CAAM’s farm journalism diploma will be honoured as ‘CAAM Fellows’ on the occasion. They are: K. Rekha Sampath, Vandana A. Poojari, Susheela B. Patil, J. Bhojaraj, Devaraj K.K., and Girish H.C.

A three-day contact programme for the fourth batch of farm and rural journalism course will be held from December 8 to 10. This year, there was overwhelming response for the course and 28 candidates have been selected. They include practicing farmers, scientists, agriculture officers, journalists, freelancers and students. Nagesh Hegde, ‘Shree’ Padre, Addoor Krishna Rao, Shivananda Kalave, Prakash Bhat, Poornaprajna Belur, Mallikarjuna Hosapalya, Anandatheertha Pyati, Ganadhalu Srikantha and G. Krishnaprasad will be the resource persons. During the course, candidates will be given practical training on farm and rural journalism.

Book on Madaka

A book written by enthusiastic journalist Harish Halemane titled ‘Karavaliya Jalanidhi - Madaka’ will be released on the occasion. The book published by Jalakoota, Vaninagara illustrates the advantages of unique water harvesting structures of coastal districts - Dakshina Kannada, Udupi (Karnataka) and Kasargod (Kerala).
