BCRT's efforts honoured

The Karnataka State Government has conferred the prestigious Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Environment Award for the year 2006-2007 to Biodiversity Conservation & Research Trust (BCRT) acknowledging its efforts towards bringing ecological balance through afforestation in Anuganalu, a village situated at the foot of Western Ghats.

State Forest and Environment Science Minister C. Chennigappa presented the award to BCRT and four other organizations across the state in the presence of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The award instituted in 2006 intends to support positive efforts done in the state to maintain ecological balance and preserve or enhance nature. The yardsticks used for evaluation include, among others, conservation of water, rejuvenation of bio diversity, enrichment of soil, environmental education, program outreach, community involvement and the extent to which it has benefited the local community. The honour includes a citation, certificate and cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.

The function was held at the Jnana Jyothi Auditorium, Central College Campus, Bangalore, on June 6, 2006 to mark the ‘World Environment Day’. The programme was organised by Karnataka Forest, Ecology and Environment Department in collaboration with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board. The secretary of BCRT, Mr. Krishnamurthy received this award on behalf of the organisation.
