Pramod Kumar Jena

Dr. Pramod Kumar Jena is a senior lecturer in Mass Communication Department in Guru Jambeshwar University, Hisar.

Born (1961) in a remote village of Ganjam District in Orissa State, he got his Masters degree and Ph.D in Mass Communication from Mysore University. He had his journalistic innings in Oriya journalism, PTI and UNI.

In 1986 April, Dr. Jena started his own rural development project - taking a wall newspaper as a tool which was reaching all the eight villages of Gautami Panchayat of Ganjam District. This effort was to bring 'some change for the better' in his locality by providing essential information input to the people. His journalism was combined with social work and contact with other development agencies to improve the rural setting.

In 1988, Dr. Jena shifted to Mysore University to pursue his doctoral study. In his study project, he brought out a local newspaper and experimented the same as a support channel of interpersonal communication. His finding was that - any narrow casting media like a small newspaper, FM radio station or a small TV station, when works in a rural setting with lot many small scale activities, integrates itself in the system and builds itself as an institution over a period of time with the beliefs and confidence of the people becomes capable of bearing the leadership for development. After completing his research project, Dr. Jena has joined Guru Jambeshwar University in 1994.

Dr. Jena's main concerns are the information-starved farmers' problems and problem of proper leadership in that community. Presently he is working on a major research project, sponsored by the UGC to find out a solution to meet the information needs of these information have-nots.
