CAAM formally entered into fifth year of its activities on December 26, 2004 at Sriranga in Sullia, Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka. The programme included presentation of two farm journalism awards, a special prize for constructive work in soil and water conservation and six diploma degrees. 'Shree' Padre's book 'Neera samasyege illive parihara' was also released on the occasion.

Known gynecologist and writer Dr. Sanjeeva Kulkarni (Dharwad, Karnataka) gave away farm journalism awards. Speaking on the occasion, an organic farmer himself, Dr. Kulkarni said, 'novel outlook towards the intricacies of earth and rational understanding would enhance its nobility. Modernisation has made farmer more dependent. Ways should be worked for a better future.'

The Centre has been presenting state level farm journalism awards since last four years to encourage farmer friendly journalism in Kannada. This year Mr. B.N. Nandeesh from Shimoga won the prize in practicing farmer category for his article 'Gobbara balasade abbarada tene' published in Adike Patrike. In the general category, Mr. Mallikarjuna Hosapalya's (based in Tumkur) article 'Nettiragi Paddhati: Adhika iluvari needuva vidhana' published in Prajavani has bagged the award. Each award carried a cash prize of Rs.2000, a citation and a parisara shilpa.

Mr. Chanabasappa Shivappa Kombli of Kakol in Haveri District in Karnataka was given a special award on the occasion in recognition of his outstanding contribution to soil and water conservation, particularly ground water recharging. The award carried a cash prize of Rs.4000 and a citation. All the awards were presented in memory of Pailoor Mahabaleshwaraiah.. His children had sponsored the awards.

Presenting the special award, Chief Programme Co-ordinator of BIRD-K (BAIF Institute for Rural Development - Karnataka), Dr. Prakash Bhat said, 'modern technology cannot do everything in agriculture. Farmers have developed practical solutions to many problems in farming. We should work towards spreading these innovations to the entire farming community.'

Dr. Sanjeeva Kulkarni released 'Shree' Padre's book titled 'Neera samasyege illive parihara'. In the book, Mr. Padre has documented various successful efforts to overcome water scarcity.

CAAM Fellows

CAAM team member Mr. Padre gave away certificates to successful candidates of first batch in farm journalism diploma. The centre has considered them as 'CAAM Fellows'. After presenting the certificates, he said, 'people can achieve what universities cannot do in the field of agriculture. Methods should be evolved to grow crops at scanty rainfall.' He also said, 'media has a greater role in improving the status of farming in the state. Farm journals should give voice to the poorest of the farmer. Agriculture news should not confine to farm page.'
Mr. Prasanna was given the 'Best Candidate' award.

Ms. Vani Shreeharsha, Ms. Suma Manjunatha, Mr. Nagaraja Mathigara, Mr. H.N. Sathyanarayana, Mr. Prashantha Shivarama Gaonkar, Mr. R. Prasanna Kumara were awarded as CAAM Fellows.

Mr. Addoor Krishna Rao, also a CAAM team member, presented prizes to the best performers in various forms of writing (Letter to the editor, Article/feature, Interview, Photography, News report and Dissertation). Mr. Prasanna was honoured as the 'Best Candidate' considering his overall performance.

A four-day foundation course was held for the second batch of diploma candidates on the occasion. On December 25, refresher course was conducted for CAAM fellows. The unique feature of the course was a dialogue with editors of farm journals and farm supplements. CAAM Fellows and diploma candidates interacted with editors and sought their advice to improve their writing skills. Editors' panel included Mr. Sudarshana (Adike Pathrike), Mr. G. Krishna Prasad (Sahaja Samruddha), Mr. Mallikarjuna Hosapalya (Pairu Pachche), Mr. M.T. Shanthimoole (Madhuprapancha), Mr. Ganadalu Srikanta (Vijaya Karnataka) and Mr. Anandatheertha Pyati (Prajavani).

Farm journalism awards and the special award were presented in the name of late Pailoor Mahabaleshwaraiah, sponsored by his children.
